swedish massage

light/medium pressure

Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy. Swedish massage is the most common and best-known type of massage in the West. If it’s your first time or you don’t get massage very often, Swedish massage is the perfect massage for you. The term “Swedish” massage is actually only recognized in English or Dutch speaking countries. Elsewhere the style is referred to as “classic massage”.

Swedish Massage is a simple but powerful form of healing involving touch, movement and energy. This gentle form of massage uses long strokes, kneading, circular movements, vibrations & tapping to help relax and energize you. It has a calming effect on the neuromuscular system, bringing about deep relaxation and equilibrium to the body’s energy level..

Our most popular massage is our relaxation treatment. Of all the benefits massage has to offer, floating off into bliss and being in a state of total relaxation is perhaps the most appealing of all. Our relaxation massage can also increase oxygen flow and help to release toxins from your muscles.

A Swedish massage helps to relax the whole body by massaging outermost layers of the muscles with long and gliding strokes. Swedish massage therapy eases off the muscle tension and it even helps recover the muscles from an injury. Swedish massage benefits are not just limited to muscle relaxation. It also improves blood circulation, raises oxygen level in the blood, and increases flexibility.

Benefits of Swedish massage
The benefits of Swedish massage have been well researched, studied, and documented. It is gentle, pleasant, and involves a full body massage. However, it doesn’t provide more intense benefits like the other types of massage like a deep tissue massage but Swedish massage techniques offer both physical and mental health benefits.

The top 7 benefits of Swedish massage are:

  • Reduces stress & increase relaxation.
  • Endorphin release to enhance the mood.
  • Improve posture.
  • Alleviate headaches.
  • Increase blood circulation.
  • Increases flexibility.
  • Improve sleep.

Before the massage

As with all hands-on holistic therapies, Swedish massage may not be suitable for everyone and certain medical conditions may prevent the use of this treatment, or may require your GP’s consent.  A full consultation will be carried out before your first treatment which enables us to ensure that Swedish massage is right for you. Please feel free to call or email us if you would like to check your suitability before your treatment. Avoid large or heavy meals prior to your treatment and the use of alcohol and any non-essential drugs.

What happens during a Swedish Massage treatment?

A massage oil will be applied to the skin to allow free movement of the massage techniques and to nourish the skin. A variety of massage techniques will be used that warm up and work the muscle tissue, releasing tension and breaking up muscle “knots” or adhered tissues, called adhesions. Swedish massage promotes relaxation, eases muscle tension and creates other health benefits. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

Stress Relief

A study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and published in The New York Times, found that volunteers who received Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Volunteers also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system, and a boost in the immune cells that may help fight colds and the flu.

After-care advice

Swedish massage has a detoxifying effect on the body and you can encourage this by drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol for the next 24 hours. Also try to rest and allow your body to heal from within.
