A massage can increase your health and well-being and also to help the body to heal itself. It is a great relaxation therapy and can help to ease tension, anxiety and stress symptoms that are present at the time.
Deep tissue massage employs techniques that work below the superficial tissue and into the deeper layers of muscle, tendons and ligaments. This helps to release chronic muscle tension through slow and deep strokes with more direct pressure or friction applied. The therapist’s body weight is combined with using reinforced thumbs, forearms, knuckles and elbows including trigger point therapy and palpitation which can cause discomfort, however the therapist will always work within the comfort zone of the client, employing breath and movement for releasing muscular tightness.
Deep tissue massage is suitable for everyone as most people develop negative postural habits due to their occupations or driving and sitting at computers, including the stresses of day to day life. Strenuous physical/leisure activities or sports can cause a build up of lactic acid in the muscles also leading to muscle tension and pain.
Deep tissue massage can be of specific help to:
- Athletes or occasional sports enthusiasts
- Individuals with chronic joint or muscle injuries
- Individuals that perform repetitive work that cause considerable strain on muscles and joints
- Individuals who suffer from stress
Before the massage
Before the massage, you will be asked about any injuries or other conditions that may affect the ability to massage safely. Things you would want tell a therapist include areas of tightness or pain, allergies, and conditions like pregnancy.
As with all hands-on holistic therapies, massage may not be suitable for everyone and certain medical conditions may prevent the use of this treatment, or may require your GP’s consent. A full consultation will be carried out before your first treatment which enables us to ensure that the massage is right for you. Please feel free to call or email us if you would like to check your suitability before your treatment.
After-care advice
Back massage has a detoxifying effect on the body and you can encourage this by drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol for the next 24 hours. Also try to rest and allow your body to heal from within.
